Studies in French-speaking Switzerland

There are four universities in French-speaking Switzerland: Lausanne (www.unil.ch), Geneva (www.unige.ch), Neuchâtel (www.unine.ch) and Fribourg (www.unifr.ch), the latter being bilingual. These universities have most recently been adapted to the European Academic System of Bologna, which punctuates studies by the stages of Bachelor and Masters.

The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) (www.epfl.ch) offers thirteen complete degree courses, from Bachelor to Masters level (which also correspond to the Bologna declaration), in the areas of engineering, the sciences, IT and communication, life sciences, architecture and the environment.

The Haute école cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL) (www.ecal.ch) is very active in numerous areas and is highly recognised for its graphic design section. It offers degree courses in graphic design, visual communication, photography, design media & interaction, cinema studies, industrial design and visual arts.

The Ecole d'arts appliqués de Genève (EAA) (www.geneve.ch/eaa) is also one of the largest art schools of the region: jewellers, ceramists, designers, stylists and graphic designers start out here! The open days are very interesting.

The Ecole supérieure d'arts appliqués de Vevey (ESAA) (www.cepv.ch/eaa), especially reputed for its photography section, also trains decorators, ceramists and specialists of 'visual merchandising'.

Swiss Hotel Management schools are internationally recognised and welcome students of all nationalities. The most famous is unquestionably the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (www.ehl.ch), founded in 1893 by Jacques Tschumi. His mission was " to train the next generation of executives and company managers for the whole of the hotel industry and hospitality professions". It prides itself on being the only school of its kind in Switzerland to have entered into the Bologna system.
